CHARITY COLLECTION

Each term the school has a collection for a range of charities. Students are involved in the decision as to which is the most appropriate charity and in the collection process. All students should participate in these worthy causes.

RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS

We are pleased to be able to celebrate all religious festivals in our school. Non-Christian festivals do sometimes occur during school time. An allowance of two days absence for such occasions is permitted without effecting pupil attendance percentage.

REWARDS AND SANCTIONS

Rewards

Our aim is to help each student to accept responsibility for their behaviour and to show self discipline. We have rewards to encourage good work and behaviour. A merit system operates to reward good work, effort and attitude in lower school. In upper school a new credit system that offers rewards more appropriate to the age group of these students has been introduced. There is an additional reward system for attendance and puntuality.

A Commendation is awarded to students who deserve special recognition for any aspect of school work including extra curricular activities and community service. Each year the school holds a graduation ceremony at which students receive awards for their performance throughout the year.

Sanctions

When students do behave in an anti-social way, or fail to carry out work satisfactorily, we have to apply sanctions. If there are any problems, we believe in involving parents at an early stage and we hope that parents will respond positively. We need to work together for the students' welfare.

The sanctions available to teachers are:

  1. Extra work to be done in the student's own time
  2. Detention - see below
  3. Reporting of the student to Progress Leader or Curriculum Leader
  4. Removal of privileges eg. having to report at break or lunch
  5. Being put on Daily Report/Target Sheet
  6. Exclusion from lessons to work alone
  7. Placement in the Early Intervention Project
  8. Placement in the Re-Integration Unit
  9. Exclusion from school

Exclusion is a very serious step which only a tiny minority of students experience and for which the school and the education authority have an agreed procedure.

Permanent Exclusions

Shorefields is an exceptionally safe and well ordered school. In order to achieve this we have to be absolutely clear over standards. Parents need to know that we do not tolerate offensive weapons, any involvement with selling drugs, persistent bullying or serious physical assault. Likewise, the malicious operation of the emergency systems in the school will be treated with the utmost seriousness.

Should any of these matters arise we would exercise our judgment very firmly and any student would be permanently excluded (expelled). Furthermore, long term persistent misbehaviour also leads to permanent exclusion (expulsion). Not surprisingly students, parents and teachers are very supportive of this stance.

School Detention

This punishment is given for disturbing the conduct and good order of the school in one way or another. It lasts for 1 hour and it is only carried out after parents have been given 24 hours notice that it will take place. We are aware that students need to get home safely and we will cooperate with parents over this whilst retaining the legal right to carry out the detention. The school retains the right to detain without prior notice any students for up to 20 minutes. We want to stress again: Our aim is to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation.

Please give us your support.
