Each term the school has a collection for a range of charities. Students are involved in the decision as to which is the most appropriate charity and in the collection process. All students should participate in these worthy causes.
We are pleased to be able to celebrate all religious festivals in our school. Non-Christian festivals do sometimes occur during school time. An allowance of two days absence for such occasions is permitted without effecting pupil attendance percentage.
Residential experiences form a very important part of the life of the school. The school has organised a number of successful trips and visits in recent years. Students have spent several weeks work experience in the University of the Sorbonne in Paris . There are annual week long visits to Universities, such as Aberystwyth, as part of the Excellence Challenge programme. There are outdoor pursuits activities to mid Wales, the Lake District and elsewhere, as well as annual trips to other European Countries. We undertake a weekend trip to North Wales with our school's feeder Year 5 students.
The policy of the Governors is not to charge for trips and visits connected to the curriculum, although a voluntary contribution is generally requested and welcomed. No child will be prevented from taking part in any curriculum-related activity through inability to contribute financially. Progress Leaders are very experienced senior staff who coordinate the work of the tutors. The Progress Leader is responsible for the welfare, discipline and progress of the students in their Year Group.
"Pastoral Care provided for students is very good." (OFSTED Report)
Tutor Groups and the Group Tutor Before students start at Shorefields, we gather information from primary schools. Students are then placed in tutor groups which
will generally remain the same, after a Year 7 induction, from Year 8 to
Year 11. The same Tutor will normally stay with the group and will have a daily contact at morning registration.
The Tutor is the person to whom a student should first turn with problems of any kind and should become the main link between school and home. If a parent wishes to discuss any matter relating to their son or daughter they should telephone school or write a note to the Tutor so that an appointment can be made.
When parents have any concerns regarding any aspects of school life, they are welcome to contact school so that arrangements can be made for discussions to take place.
