Shorefields SATS Revision Guide

Shorefields SATS Revision Guide

For Y9 English Pupils
Careers - The World of Work

Careers Education forms part of the PSHE course and tutorial work and specific units deal with the decisions which students need to take in choosing courses as well as giving background to the world of work. All students go on to work experience in their final year.

The Careers Officer comes to school frequently and parents are invited to attend the interview given to each student in year 11. For Post 16 students there is a separate programme of guidance and work sampling at an appropriate level.

NON-CURRICULAR LEARNING

Assemblies

Assemblies are broadly Christian in character and seek to heighten spiritual awareness and reinforce the moral values and Christian traditions rooted in our society. Assemblies are held weekly for lower school and upper school. Tutor Groups assemble each day for morning registration and to consider a spiritual thought for the day. Shorefields has established a number of chaplaincies to represent the main faiths encompassed by the student population and celebrate their main festivals.

PSHE and Citizenship

All students take PSHCE, both as a course of lessons and as part of a 5 year tutorial programme.

Throughout we aim to develop students' self esteem and maximise their potential. Careers Education, Health Education and the promotion of social communication skills etc., are all included as we aim to best prepare our students for life in an ever changing world.

In line with the changes to the national curriculum concerning citizenship, programmes of study for all year groups encourage the development of understanding rights and responsibilities in society. This is supported by subject specific issues of citizenship.

Religious Education

All students in Year 7 - 9 will study Religious Education for one lesson per week. This RE course is nondenominational and takes into account the fact that students will come from many different religious, and indeed, non -religious backgrounds. This course will also introduce students to other faiths and cultures. The aim of the course is to help the students develop an awareness of the spiritual side of life and to appreciate the important role of religion in everyday life. It should help them to relate their own values and current moral issues to the teachings of Christianity and other religions. Religious Studies is also studied in years 10 and 11 by all students as part of a GCSE course incorporating PSE and Citizenship.

Parents can withdraw their children - alternative provision is discussed with parents.

Sex Education

Certain aspects of human reproduction are covered in Science lessons. The topic is dealt with more fully as part of the PSHE course. The emphasis is on responsible behaviour and the moral aspects of sexual relationships.

The course has been carefully devised to ensure topics are dealt with sensitively and with a regard to the maturity of the students. Parents can withdraw children.
