Basketball Final 2010 - BLUECOAT 50 - 52 SHOREFIELDS

Shorefields Yr 10 Basketball Team became the first team ever in the school’s history to win the prestigious ESBBA Liverpool Cup competition!

They defeated the mighty Bluecoat School 52 -50 in an unbelievable, heart-stopping, Disney movie style final.

Shorefields got off to poor start trailing 19 – 9 after the first quarter. The 2nd quarter was more evenly balanced and at half time the score was 28 – 18 to Bluecoat. The 2nd half was nip and tuck, but Bluecoat took a 16 point lead. Things were looking bleak for Shorefields.

Going into the final quarter, Shorefields still trailed by 10 points and Blucoat looked to have it in the bag. With 5 minutes left in the game, the comeback began.

Sidney Walimbwa reduced the deficit to seven points with a 2 pointer and a free shot. Josh Mongomery and George Barr then got Bluecoat’s lead down to 5 points. Bluecoat looked rattled and they started to make big mistakes.

With 30 seconds remaining Shorefields still trailed by 2 points. Nathan Faragher was fouled and went to the free throw line with the chance of levelling the game. He held his nerve, under extreme pressure and sunk both shots levelling the game 50 – 50 with only 14 seconds remaining.

Bluecoat had possession and went on the attack. After a 3 second violation by Bluecoat, Shorefields won possession. Josh Mongomery drove down the court and scored a lay-up, putting us in the lead for the first time in the game….. with only 2 second remaining

Bluecoat had the chance to level from the free throw line. The atmosphere was unbelievably tense. Bluecoat’s shooter crumbled under the pressure and missed both shots, sparking wild celebrations, tears and mass euphoria from both students and staff from Shorefields.

Bluecoat looked shell shocked.

The effort, team sprit and attitude displayed by the whole team were outstanding. The game was thrilling and a joy to be a part of.

Special mention needs to given to Josh Montgomery, who was Most Valuable Player. He was truly amazing!
