Liverpool, Liverpool, where do I start?
About the place that’s always in my heart.
Many things happened of which I’m a fan
But I think I’ll start from where it began.
In 1207 we were born as a city,
And from then it all looked pretty.
Old King John knew we had potential,
He knew our city would be essential.
We grew and grew until we became a port,
And cities ‘round the world, their eyes were caught.
Ships were in and out each day,
So the good dock workers could never lay.
Then came the slave trade, dividing a city,
It was good pay, but certainly not pretty.
All it did was cause trouble and strife,
With African families separated for life.
Then we banned slavery; the Yanks soon followed,
The traders’ pride and riches swallowed.
The end of a dark time, the city moved on,
But the memories of the horror will never be gone.
Liverpool still remained strong and free,
Then Queen Vic made us a working city.
Times moved on, then came the war,
An unimaginable horror that distraught us all.
Blackouts, blitzes, rubble on the street,
But we and England survived and were soon back on our feet.
The city was and still is football mad,
Some great moments, some bad.
Two great teams, unrivalled in skill,
Watching the derby was always a thrill.
Hillsborough devastated and united a city,
96 lost-unreal pity.
As always, we moved on from dark times,
The Capital of Culture was sublime.
1 full year of celebrating our home,
All around the city, tourists roam.
Seeing all the cultures is fantastic,
We’ll all have times that are never drastic.
Now, with our great city bathed in light,
All I can say is that the future looks bright.
