For Y9 English Pupils
Careers - The World of Work

Careers Education forms part of the PSHE course and tutorial work and specific units deal with the decisions which students need to take in choosing courses as well as giving background to the world of work. All students go on to work experience in their final year.

The Careers Officer comes to school frequently and parents are invited to attend the interview given to each student in year 11. For Post 16 students there is a separate programme of guidance and work sampling at an appropriate level.

TTHE CURRICULUM - PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Shorefields Technology College

Differentiation and Assessment in the Curriculum

Each group will now stay with one teacher throughout the year (the only time this may change is when a group may have an area where the teacher is not as qualified as others to take the group e.g. trampolining). At the end of each module the teacher will assess each child. This will give the teacher the chance to monitor progress of each group and set tasks according to ability levels.

By the time pupils reach year 9 they can be put into different ability groups for skiing and canoeing based on the previous years assessment.

At Key Stage 4, pupils are given options to choose from in PE, meaning that they can take part in a sport or activity that they enjoy.

Again, when the pupils come to do athletics in KS4 they can be put into different ability groups based on that years assessment.

Year 12

This year there will be some 70 (approx) pupils in the Sixth Form. Each week three teachers will be available so when a group goes to an off-site education base, there will still be opportunities in school.

This year the following activities will be offered:

  • Skiing
  • Canoeing
  • Football
  • Ice Skating
  • Aerobics
  • Fitness
  • Hockey
  • Go-Karting
  • Outdoor Activities (working, camping and cycling)
  • Badminton

Also, the PE department will be involved in the 6th Form trip to Florida.

Citizenship in the Curriculum

As citizenship becomes part of the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum, PE can assist in promoting some of the main aspects of children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

In Physical Education lessons, pupils can be taught the skills of:

  • Communication
  • Promoting Thinking Skills
  • Problem Solving
  • Dealing with Moral Issues
  • Participating in School and Community Based Activities

Pupils can also be introduced to:

  • The diversity of ethnic identities in the Uk and the need for mutual  respect and understanding (NC Ref. 1b)
  • The importance of resolving conflict early (NC Ref. 1g)
  • Contribute to Group Discussions (NC Ref. 2c)

Reflect on the process of participating (NC Ref. 3c)

The PE department now has two teachers who have just successfully passed their NQT status. This now means that the PE department has four full time teachers and one part time teacher to help in the delivery of the National Curriculum.

Some aspects of the curriculum were not covered last year, especially in Dance and Gymnastics. This was due to a severe lack of facilities durig the school refurbishment.

Because of this situation, some of the groups will not be as advanced in some areas as they should be. Every effort will be made to deliver the curriculum and try to catch up again on the missed aspects of PE.

Following last years delivery of the curriculum, the following statements should be noted:

  • A new assessment procedure has been introduced so as to coincide  with National Curriculum guidelines.
  • All groups are now single gender with the exception of some KS4 option groups and GCSE PE (KS5 PE is also mixed gender).
  • GCSE PE is now taught in both year 10 and year 11. Following the  success of last years Y11 group, steps have been taken to try and improve on  the current year 11 projected grades.
  • Pupils are to continue to be made aware of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and are taught how to prepare correctly for exercise.
  • The kit policy in KS3 has been introduced and is now strictly adhered to (KS4 are allowed to wear any suitable sports clothes).
  • Pe is now its' own faculty and as a result meets as a group every  other Wednesday (fixtures permitting). There is also a PE faculty detention on a Monday.

BTEC in sports studies has now been introduced and is now studied by some 15 pupils in year 9.

Shorefields PE dept now has some 140 pupils studying an accredited course. The pupils can follow a course of study in

  • GCSE PE
  • BTEC in PE
  • Expressive Arts

We have just finished the 2006-2007 FA Cup competition. Some 250 pupils took part including 32 teams and some excellent displays and performances by all competitors.

The School Sports Day is now established and has ran successfully for 4 years with each year successfully competing in a days long event.

The department now has 6 members of staff fully committed to improving the health, fitness and sporting knowledge of all the pupils of the school.

The school has become established in dance competitions with Miss Bulmer entering the school (with a high degree of success) in various annual events throughout the city.

With the imminent completion of the new Star Fields site it is hoped the school will be able to move forward and enhance further the performances of our pupils.

Shorefields Football Report 2006-07

Year 7

The year 7 football team enjoyed a successful first year. After losing in the second round of the Merseyside cup the team went on to produce some excellent displays. Out of the 6 matches they played they won 2 and some outstanding performances came from individuals such as player of the year Josh Montgommery.

The team also performed well in the City 5'a' side competitions coming 2 nd in the South Liverpool Finals.

I feel that there is a nucleus of a strong team in the year and within time the team should go from strength to strength.

Year 8

The boys enjoyed a mixed year with some highs and some lows. A lot of the team from year 7 left the team this year, so it was a transitional year for the team. The boys played 8 games and won 5 of these. Perhaps the best performance came when the team beat a strong Bluecoat team in the Merseyside Cup by two goals to nil.

Some outstanding individual performances were recorded but perhaps the player of the season was Bobby Jones who always led by example. Three of the boys will be nominated for Liverpool School boys trials next year.

Year 9

The most indifferent team in the school, with 5 players being recommended for Liverpool Schoolboy trials. The Shorefields year 9 team played 5 matches and won 2 of these games drawing one and losing 2. Several boys were excellent throughout the year but I would like to name Liam Owens as the player of the season who always gave 100% in various positions.

Year 10

The team enjoyed an indifferent year. The boys played 5 games winning 2 drawing one and losing 2. Some memorable performances came this year including an impressive and mature display against St Ambrose Barlow.

Several boys played well throughout the year including Toto Nsiala and David Nquot who was player of the season. I wish David all the best in his recovering from his broken leg.

Year 11

As the team entered their final school year it produced some spirited displays notably a magnificent win over Birkdale in the Merseyside Cup.

Throughout the five years in the school this team has seen many players come and go but Liam Dawson, Jacob Baptista, Luke Vaughan, Daley Gibiliru and Kieron Newport have been the backbone of the team throughout.

Player of the season goes to Liam Dawson. I wish all these boys the very best of luck in the future.
